It’s A New Year! Another Year Older But Much, Much Wiser!

Time flies, so they say, but with every year that passes, we get a little bit older. And when we get older, our bodies get older too. Some of us look it, some of us don’t. Some of us feel it, some of us don’t. Why is that? Well genetics plays a bit part in it, but so does your environment and lifestyle.

Stress, diet, lack of exercise and environmental pollutants are all major contributors to early aging. Luckily there is something you can do right now to undo some of the harmful effects of all of these things. Keeping yourself healthy, balanced, and free of toxic build-up are ways to stay vital into your very senior years.
How Would You Like to Increase Longevity?

Strengthen the immune system.

From stress to pollutants to disease-causing bacteria, the list of invisible enemies that can damage our health is huge. And the immune system, our bodies’ frontline defense, deals with all of them. A strong immune system can mean the difference between life and death when we are older. To stay finely tuned, the immune system requires proper nutrition, which can include supplements, such as vitamins, antioxidants and herbal formulas that keep it strong.

Maintain cardiovascular health.

Cardiovascular health is essential for optimal performance and longevity. The heart and vascular system distribute blood, which provides oxygen, carries nutrients, and removes waste from cells. When the heart and lungs are strong, the body can obtain more oxygen; remove more waste products and perform at higher levels for longer periods of time. We can protect our cardiovascular health by using specific supplements that support this system, including Omega 3 Fish Oil, herbs such as Hawthorn, Vitamin E, and various minerals and amino acids.

Prevent bone loss.

In our skeletal system, bone is constantly being broken down and rebuilt by bone-building cells called osteoblasts. A healthy skeletal system is vital in any endeavor since it protects the internal organs, provides support for the muscles, and gives us the incredible range of motion we require. With age, our bones gradually become weaker. Fortunately exercise and proper diet, including supplements such as calcium, vitamin D3, magnesium and vitamin K2, can help slow the loss of bone mass.

Restore hormone levels.

With age, levels of many of our hormones decline, including growth hormone. This can result in slowed mental alertness and memory; declines in strength, endurance, and lean mass; lowered sex drive in men; and even those telltale signs of aging—lines and wrinkles in our skin. Researchers theorize that by naturally increasing levels of hormones with supplementation, our bodies’ hormones, along with their benefits, may be restored to youthful peaks. Hormone testing is a great place to start. When you know your levels, supplementing with progesterone creams or testosterone boosters can make a big difference in how you feel.

Prevent free radical damage.

Imperfect diets and active lifestyles take a toll, not just on our muscles, but on our entire bodies, by increasing the release of free radicals. Fortunately, the use of antioxidants may help minimize the amount of free radicals that damage cells. The proper use of antioxidants may improve recovery time, reduce muscle soreness, postpone fatigue, boost immune functioning, and perhaps even defy the aging process. There have been studies on the benefits of Resveratrol, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Vitamins A, C, E and Selenium on their antioxidant and anti-aging benefits.

Detoxify the body.

You change the oil in your car to keep it running smoothly, but how often do you think about your liver? A clean and healthy liver allows our bodies to quickly eliminate toxins and waste products that otherwise get stored in our tissues, making us sluggish, achy, and foggy-headed. Key herbs such as milk thistle, burdock, and dandelion root support the detoxifying abilities of the liver and keep it healthy.

Health Benefits of Coconut Oil

Reblogged from organicfacts.net

The health benefits of coconut oil include hair care, skin care, stress relief, maintaining cholesterol levels, weight loss, increased immunity, proper digestion and metabolism, relief from kidney problems, heart diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, HIV and cancer, dental care, and bone strength. These benefits of coconut oil can be attributed to the presence of lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid, and its properties such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, soothing, etc

How is Lauric Acid Used by our body?

The human body converts lauric acid into monolaurin which is claimed to help in dealing with viruses and bacteria causing diseases such as herpes, influenza, cytomegalovirus, and even HIV. It helps in fighting harmful bacteria such as listeria monocytogenes and heliobacter pylori, and harmful protozoa such as giardia lamblia. As a result of these various health benefits of coconut oil, though its exact mechanism of action was unknown, it has been extensively used in Ayurveda, the traditional Indian medicinal system. The Coconut Research Center has compiled various references on scientific research done on coconut oil.

Hair Care:

Coconut oil is one of the best natural nutrition for hair. It helps in healthy growth of hair providing them a shiny complexion. Regular massage of the head with coconut oil ensures that your scalp is free of dandruff, lice, and lice eggs, even if your scalp is dry. Coconut oil is extensively used in the Indian sub-continent for hair care. Most of the people in these countries apply coconut oil on their hair daily after bath. It is an excellent conditioner and helps in the re-growth of damaged hair. It also provides the essential proteins required for nourishing damaged hair. It is therefore used as hair care oil and used in manufacturing various conditioners, and dandruff relief creams. Coconut oil is normally applied topically for hair care.

Skin Care:

Coconut oil is excellent massage oil for the skin as well. It acts as an effective moisturizer on all types of skins including dry skin. The benefit of coconut oil on the skin is comparable to that of mineral oil. Further, unlike mineral oil, there is no chance of having any adverse side effects on the skin with the application of coconut oil. Coconut oil therefore is a safe solution for preventing dryness and flaking of skin. It also delays wrinkles, and sagging of skin which normally become prominent with age. Coconut oil also helps in treating various skin problems including psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema and other skin infections. Therefore coconut oil forms the basic ingredient of various body care products such as soaps, lotions, creams, etc., used for skin care. Coconut oil also helps in preventing premature aging and degenerative diseases due to its antioxidant properties.

Heart Diseases:

There is a misconception spread among many people that coconut oil is not good for the heart. This is because it contains a large quantity of saturated fats. However, coconut oil is beneficial for the heart. It contains about 50% lauric acid, which helps in preventing various heart problems including high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure. The saturated fats present in coconut oil are not harmful as it happens in case of other vegetables oils. It does not lead to increase in LDL levels. It also reduces the incidence of injury in arteries and therefore helps in preventing atherosclerosis.

Weight Loss:

Coconut oil is very useful in reducing weight. It contains short and medium-chain fatty acids that help in taking off excessive weight. It is also easy to digest and it helps in healthy functioning of the thyroid and enzymes systems. Further, it increases the body metabolism by removing stress on pancreases, thereby burning out more energy and helping obese and overweight people reduce their weight. Hence, people living in tropical coastal areas, who eat coconut oil daily as their primary cooking oil, are normally not fat, obese or overweight.

Digestion:

Internal use of coconut oil occurs primarily as cooking oil. Coconut oil helps in improving the digestive system and thus prevents various stomach and digestion related problems including irritable bowel syndrome. The saturated fats present in coconut oil have anti microbial properties and help in dealing with various bacteria, fungi, parasites, etc., that cause indigestion. Coconut oil also helps in absorption of other nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and amino acids.

Immunity:

Coconut oil is also good for the immune system. It strengthens the immune system as it contains antimicrobial lipids, lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid which have antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties.

Healing and Infections:

When applied on infections, it forms a chemical layer which protects the infected body part from external dust, air, fungi, bacteria and virus. Coconut oil is most effective on bruises as it speeds up the healing process by repairing damaged tissues.

Infections:

Coconut oil is very effective against a variety of infections due to its antifungal, antiviral, and antibacterial properties. According to the Coconut Research Center, coconut oil kills viruses that cause influenza, measles, hepatitis, herpes, SARS, etc. It also kills bacteria that cause ulcers, throat infections, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, and gonorrhea, etc. Coconut oil is also effective on fungi and yeast that cause candidiasis, ringworm, athlete’s foot, thrush, diaper rash, etc.

Liver:

The presence of medium chain triglycerides and fatty acids helps in preventing liver diseases as they substances are easily converted into energy when they reach the liver, thus reducing work load on the liver and also preventing accumulation of fat.

Kidney:

Coconut oil helps in preventing kidney and gall bladder diseases. It also helps in dissolving kidney stones.

Pancreatitis:

Coconut oil is also believed to be useful in treating pancreatitis.

Stress Relief:

Coconut oil is very soothing and hence it helps in removing stress. Applying coconut oil to the head followed with a gentle massage helps in removing mental fatigue.

Diabetes:

Coconut oil helps in controlling blood sugar, and improves the secretion of insulin. It also helps in effective utilization of blood glucose, thereby preventing and treating diabetes.

Bones:

As mentioned earlier, coconut oil improves the ability of our body to absorb important minerals. These include calcium and magnesium which are necessary for development of bones. Thus coconut oil is very useful to women who are prone to osteoporosis after middle age.

Dental Care:

Calcium is an important element present in teeth. Since coconut oil facilitates absorption of calcium by the body, it helps in getting strong teeth. Coconut oil also stops tooth decay.

HIV and Cancer:

It is believed that coconut oil plays an instrumental role in reducing viral susceptibility of HIV and cancer patients. Preliminary research has shown indications of the effect of coconut oil on reducing the viral load of HIV patients (Reference).

Finally, coconut oil is often preferred by athletes and body builders and by those who are dieting. The reason behind this being that coconut oil contains lesser calories than other oils, its fat content is easily converted into energy and it does not lead to accumulation of fat in the heart and arteries. Coconut oil helps in boosting energy and endurance, and enhances the performance of athletes.

Coconut Oil and Alzheimer’s Disease:

There are reports of  research conducted by Dr. Newport stating that coconut oil is useful for treating Alzheimer’s disease. Apart from this there is no scientific evidence or traditional knowledge or coconut oil being used for treating Alzheimer’s. It was also not known traditionally that coconut oil helps in the brain function.

Why is Coconut Oil Solid?

Unlike most other oils, coconut oil has a high melting point – about 24 to 25 degress Celcius or 76-78 Farenheit. Therefore it is solid at room temperature and melts only when the temperatures go high. Hence, if you buy a bottle of coconut oil and find it solid, don’t think that there is some problem with it. Coconut oil is like this only. And of course, don’t keep it in your refrigerator.

How to Use Coconut Oil?

If you are using coconut oil for topical purposes, especially hair care, just melt the oil (if it is solid) by keeping the bottle in the sun or warm water. You can also take some coconut oil out and put it in a small bowl and heat the bowl over a flame (do not use microwave). Then take the oil on your palm and apply it to your hair. If you want to use it for internal consumption, simply replace butter or vegetable oils with coconut oil in your recipes. Remember, you need not switch to coconut oil completely, as you will miss the benefits of other oils and dairy products.

Can I Use Coconut Oil for Cooking?

Yes, in most of the tropical coastal regions, people use coconut oil for cooking.

I Don’t Like the Taste of Coconut Oil. What Should I do?

Try using coconut oil in some different recipe. That may help. If you get nauseated after eating coconut oil, don’t force yourself. As it happens with any other food item, your body may be allergic to coconut oil and it is best not to consume it.

Lori Lost 50 Pounds in 3 Months & She Thinks You Can Too! Here’s her story…

“I saw the Dr Oz Show about HCG and although he didn’t completely endorse the diet, he did say that it works but to check with your physician.  I researched more online about the diet and decided it sounded right for me.  I wanted to try the homeopathic HCG and called Baums to see if they carried it. They did so I went into the Munster store that day to purchase it.  I take  4 pellets, 3 times a day – that part couldn’t be easier.  I won’t tell you the diet plan is easy – only worth the effort.  I never felt hungry, EVER.

It is difficult to have a social life and not eat along with everyone else.  But every morning when I stepped on the scale and saw a loss, it made it all worth it. And there was some loss almost every day.  In a period of just over 3 months I lost 50 lbs.  Although I do want to lose more, I took a break to stabilize and have done so pretty successfully.

You can’t go back to your old way of eating and keep off the weight though – it’s a lifestyle change.  But even while on the diet, I felt better. On the limited calories you don’t have much extra energy, but you can lose weight without exercise and that was right up my alley. Once I had lost the weight,  I found I couldn’t wait to start walking and riding my bike. Before the diet I didn’t have the energy to those things.

I have recommended this diet to many of my friends and several have also had success with the Buckeye HCG.  There are products out there that claim to be HCG but they actually don’t have any HCG in them at all – and that is scary because you certainly will lose weight on 500 calories a day but you’ll also lose muscle.  The HCG burns off the fat that your body is storing, not the muscle.  I’ve tried so many diets – and this truly is the only one that has been successful for me. Even my personal physician said it’s a great diet if  you can stick to it;  not unhealthy or dangerous.

There are several online groups you can find that offer great support and recipes to make the whole process easier.  I would encourage anyone that needs to lose weight to give this product an honest effort and you will see results.  The first two weeks are the hardest as your body goes through the sugar withdraw – but stick with it because your efforts will pay off!”

Get started on HCG TODAY! What have you got to lose, except those awful, extra pounds!

You Should Be Using Coconut Oil! Here’s Why…

Reblogged from Coconut Research Center

Coconut
(Cocos nucifera)
The Tree of Life The scientific name for coconut is Cocos nucifera. Early Spanish explorers called it coco, which means “monkey face” because the three indentations (eyes) on the hairy nut resembles the head and face of a monkey. Nucifera means “nut-bearing.”

The coconut provides a nutritious source of meat, juice, milk, and oil that has fed and nourished populations around the world for generations. On many islands coconut is a staple in the diet and provides the majority of the food eaten. Nearly one third of the world’s population depends on coconut to some degree for their food and their economy. Among these cultures the coconut has a long and respected history.
Coconut is highly nutritious and rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals. It is classified as a “functional food” because it provides many health benefits beyond its nutritional content. Coconut oil is of special interest because it possesses healing properties far beyond that of any other dietary oil and is extensively used in traditional medicine among Asian and Pacific populations. Pacific Islanders consider coconut oil to be the cure for all illness. The coconut palm is so highly valued by them as both a source of food and medicine that it is called “The Tree of Life.” Only recently has modern medical science unlocked the secrets to coconut’s amazing healing powers.

Coconut In Traditional Medicine

People from many diverse cultures, languages, religions, and races scattered around the globe have revered the coconut as a valuable source of both food and medicine. Wherever the coconut palm grows the people have learned of its importance as a effective medicine. Coconut Oil

While coconut possesses many health benefits due to its fiber and nutritional content, it’s the oil that makes it a truly remarkable food and medicine.

Once mistakenly believed to be unhealthy because of its high saturated fat content, it is now known that the fat in coconut oil is a unique and different from most all other fats and possesses many health giving properties. It is now gaining long overdue recognition as a nutritious health food.

Coconut oil has been described as “the healthiest oil on earth.” That’s quite a remarkable statement. What makes coconut oil so good? What makes it different from all other oils, especially other saturated fats?

The difference is in the fat molecule. All fats and oils are composed of molecules called fatty acids. There are two methods of classifying fatty acids. The first you are probably familiar with, is based on saturation. You have saturated fats, monounsaturated fats, and polyunsaturated fats. Another system of classification is based on molecular size or length of the carbon chain within each fatty acid. Fatty acids consist of long chains of carbon atoms with hydrogen atoms attached. In this system you have short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA), and long-chain fatty acids (LCFA). Coconut oil is composed predominately of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA), also known as medium-chain triglycerides (MCT).

The vast majority of fats and oils in our diets, whether they are saturated or unsaturated or come from animals or plants, are composed of long-chain fatty acids (LCFA). Some 98 to 100% of all the fatty acids you consume are LCFA.

The size of the fatty acid is extremely important. Why? Because our bodies respond to and metabolize each fatty acid differently depending on its size. So the physiological effects of MCFA in coconut oil are distinctly different from those of LCFA more commonly found in our foods. The saturated fatty acids in coconut oil are predominately medium-chain fatty acids. Both the saturated and unsaturated fat found in meat, milk, eggs, and plants (including most all vegetable oils) are composed of LCFA.

MCFA are very different from LCFA. They do not have a negative effect on cholesterol and help to protect against heart disease. MCFA help to lower the risk of both atherosclerosis and heart disease. It is primarily due to the MCFA in coconut oil that makes it so special and so beneficial.

There are only a very few good dietary sources of MCFA. By far the best sources are from coconut and palm kernel oils.

Berry Slimming

Raspberry ketones bring fat-fighting power to healthy weight management.

Reblogged from Energy Times July/August 2012

by Lisa James

Once regarded by most people as simply a refreshing summer treat, the raspberry has achieved superfruit status over the past several years for its ability to promote optimal well-being. A rich source of fiber, manganese, vitamin C and other nutrients, raspberries contain antioxidant
substances that have been linked to prevention of cancer and an eye condition called macular degeneration, as well as other health benefits.

Scientists have also isolated a family of compounds called berry ketones from the raspberry, substances used in foods, cosmetics and perfumes for their delicately fruit-like aroma. In addition, research indicates that ketones can promote weight control by helping the body burn off excess
fat deposits.

Where Fat Goes

Fat under the skin helps insulate the body against temperature extremes, while that within the abdominal cavity protects vital organs against trauma. But the main function of fat is to serve as an energy reservoir against times when calories are scarce—a situation much more common over previous centuries than it has been for the past hundred years. Besides its lack of visual appeal, too much abdominal fat correlates with increases in such health risks as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and chronic inflammation.

Fat deposits mostly consist of adipocytes, specialized cells that can expand and contract depending on the amount of fat within them. This happens when an enzyme called lipase frees fatty acids from lipoproteins; these acids are then assembled into triglycerides within the fat cells. The process is regulated by the interplay among a number of hormones, such as insulin and leptin.

Breaking It Down

One of the substances that help control the fat buildup-and-breakdown process is the hormone adiponectin, which is secreted from the fat deposits themselves. Higher adiponectin levels in the bloodstream have been linked to lower amounts of body fat, as well as reduced risk of diabetes, obesity, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and other metabolic disorders.

Korean researchers working with mice have found that berry ketones boost adiponectin production and effectiveness, leading to an increase in fat breakdown, a process known as lipolysis. As a result, adipocytes in the mice accumulated less fat (Planta Medica 10/10).

The Korean study supports an earlier study done in Japan. This research team fed different groups of mice a high-fat diet; some of the groups were also given various levels of berry ketones. Those mice that didn’t receive the compound not only gained abdominal fat but showed greater fat deposits in their livers, a sign of metabolic dysfunction. In contrast, the berry ketone groups didn’t develop body fat and their livers remained healthy (Life Sciences 5/05).

Raspberry ketones do their best work when combined with other natural weight control aids. Some, such as CLA and Coleus forskohlii, also promote fat breakdown. Others, such as sea vegetables and white bean extract, block carb absorption, which helps keep blood sugar on an even keel.

Some aids, such as green tea, guarana and the theobromine found in cacao, increase energy and boost metabolism. And one, Synaptose, helps regulate the brain to cut cravings and allows people to establish a healthier relationship with food.

We already knew that raspberries were good for you. Now it seems they may help you manage your weight naturally as well.

Raspberry Ketones, CLA, and Coleus Forskohlii are available at Baum’s Natural Foods and in stock now!

Health Benefits of Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA)

Many people are taking CLA as an expensive supplement for the benefits described below. But wouldn’t it make much more sense to get it for free in your food? There is a new reason why it may be beneficial to allow cows to graze on pasture. That reason involves a compound called conjugated linoleic acid (CLA).

CLA is a fatty acid found in beef and dairy fats. Scientific interest in CLA was stimulated in 1988 when a University of Wisconsin researcher discovered its cancer-fighting properties in a study of rats fed fried hamburger. CLA cannot be produced by the human body, but it can be obtained through foods such as whole milk, butter, beef, and lamb.

“The interesting thing is that dairy cattle that graze produce higher amounts of CLA in their milk than those which receive conserved feed, such as grain, hay, and silage,” says Agricultural Research dairy scientist Larry Satter. This is true even when the nongrazers eat pasture grass conserved as hay. Satter, who is based at the Dairy Forage Research Center in Madison, Wisconsin, conducted a study comparing the amount of CLA in milk from cows grazing on pasture to the amount from cows fed hay or silage. His findings: Pasture-grazed cows had 500% more CLA in their milk than those fed silage. Larry Satter is at the USDA-ARS U.S. Dairy Forage Research Center, 1950 Linden Lane, University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI 53706

CLA may be one of the most potent cancer-fighting substances in our diet. In animal studies, as little as one half of one percent CLA in the diet has reduced tumor burden by more than 50 percent.

CLA has also been shown to reduce body fat in people who are overweight

by Mary Shomon
A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study, published in the December 2000 issue of the Journal of Nutrition found that CLA reduces fat and preserves muscle tissue. According to the research project manager, an average reduction of six pounds of body fat was found in the group that took CLA, compared to a placebo group. The study found that approximately 3.4 grams of CLA per day is the level needed to obtain the beneficial effects of CLA on body fat.

Dr. Michael Pariza, who conducted research on CLA with the University of Wisconsin-Madison, reported in August 2000 to the American Chemical Society that “It doesn’t make a big fat cell get little. What it rather does is keep a little fat cell from getting big.”

Pariza’s research did not find weight loss in his group of 71 overweight people, but what he did find was that when the dieters stopped dieting, and gained back weight, those taking CLA “were more likely to gain muscle and not fat.”

In a separate study conducted at Purdue University in Indiana, CLA was found to improve insulin levels in about two-thirds of diabetic patients, and moderately reduced the blood glucose level and triglyceride levels.

CLA has been the subject of a variety of research in the past several years, and findings also suggest that some of the other benefits of CLA include the following:

Increases metabolic rate — This would obviously be a positive benefit for thyroid patients, as hypothyroidism — even when treated — can reduce the metabolic rate in some people.
Decreases abdominal fat — Adrenal imbalances and hormonal shifts that are common in thyroid patients frequently cause rapid accumulation of abdominal fat, so this benefit could be quite helpful.
Enhances muscle growth — Muscle burns fat, which also contributes to increased metabolism, which is useful in weight loss and management.
Lowers cholesterol and triglycerides — Since many thyroid patients have elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels, even with treatment, this benefit can have an impact on a thyroid patient’s health.
Lowers insulin resistance — Insulin resistance is a risk for some hypothyroid patients, and lowering it can also help prevent adult-onset diabetes and make it easier to control weight.
Reduces food-induced allergic reactions — Since food allergies can be at play when weight loss becomes difficult, this can be of help to thyroid patients.
Enhances immune system — Since most cases of thyroid disease are autoimmune in nature, enhancing the immune system’s ability to function properly is a positive benefit.

If you’re interested in taking CLA to help with weight loss, keep in mind that it’s not a magic, and you will need to start a program of diet and exercise in order to successfully lose weight and keep it off.

One to try! Iron Tek CLA 1,000 mg softgels. 3 a day help melt fat away! Baum’s Natural Foods has it on sale for $5 off this month only!

Jay Robb’s 3-Step Shape-Up Plan: Day 3

STEP 3 – SHAPE YOUR BODY

Exercise is the third step in the process of YOU looking and feeling your absolute best—inside and out. Your diet is your fat melter and exercise is your body shaper. Exercise allows a woman to create a firm sexy body that has the curves and contour of a movie star or glamour model. For guys, exercise can build big arms, tight abs, a wide back, and powerful thighs. Exercise keeps men and women young, healthy, and sexually attractive. Exercise is critical to your wellbeing but you must exercise properly or you will waste your time, injure yourself, or create an out-of-balance body.

Exercise does not need to be viewed as torture or punishment. While exercise requires effort, it should be enjoyable and not exhausting. For this reason, I suggest doing a 30-minute workout everyday, or every other day.

Why Am I Qualified to Teach You?

I have owned and operated two successful fitness clubs, competed as a drug-free natural bodybuilder, promoted several of America’s first drug-free bodybuilding contests, was a personal trainer for over 10 years, was a feature columnist for Natural Bodybuilding Magazine for over 20 years, and assisted the National Gym Association in creating and producing their personal training certification program. And that’s not to mention the fact that I created the world’s first protein powder made with rBGH-free whey protein. I am also the world’s first protein-powder formulator who used stevia instead of artificial sweeteners so that health-and-fitness-conscious men and women had an alternative to the traditional junk that was—and still is—on the market. In short, I am not a new kid on the block and it delights me to be able to share my 30-plus years of health and fitness wisdom with you.

I am not a huge fan of performing cardio work to lower one’s body fat. Cardiovascular training is great if you wish to be physically fit in general or for a specific sport, but for losing weight it can be useless of even counterproductive. A fast-paced workout with weights that elevates the heart rate for at least 15 minutes is also a powerful way to train your heart and lungs.

Do You Need a Personal Trainer?
Good personal trainers are hard to find. Oh, there are loads of personal trainers out there, but selecting one that is qualified and can help you will require some effort on your part. First note that you are not hiring a trainer to help you lose weight in the gym. Your trainer’s job is to tone, shape, and condition your body if you are a woman and build bigger muscles and overall power if you are a man. That’s it. Just because you work with a trainer it doesn’t mean you will magically melt away all your unwanted fat. That is a pipedream. Your diet is your fat melter. Period. Never forget that fact.

You need a personal trainer if you:

•  Want someone to keep you motivated
•  Need instructions on how to perform exercises properly
•  Desire to break through a plateau in your training
•  Would like another perspective on you training routine
•  Need someone to make you accountable

If you have limited financial resources you can still utilize a personal trainer but just limit your sessions to once a week perhaps. Or, hire a trainer for six sessions until you have learned all the basics, then launch out on your own. Or, hire a trainer for three sessions every three months to help keep you motivated.

How to Hire a Good Trainer

Look for a trainer who walks their talk and their body reflects it. Don’t hire wimpy or out of shape trainer. Trainers should be fit AND lean. Credentials can be deceiving. A trainer may be a good learner but may not be a good teacher. If you are about to make a sizable investment in a trainer, request a free session to see if you mesh well with the trainer. Some trainers are motivating and others are a huge turn off. Ask your trainer for a list of successful clients that he or she has trained and talk with these clients. Meet them and get their feedback. If you are hiring an inexperienced trainer (a trainer who has a cert but has less than one year’s experience) I suggest you request their sessions be discounted because he or she will be learning their trade by training you.

Below are various exercise routines for various people and applications. Keep in mind, exercising is NOT for weight loss. Exercise is for getting fit. You must enjoy working out or you will never stick with it, so FIND a way to love it. Do workouts that actually FEEL GOOD to you. I know that may sound impossible, but it is not. In my opinion, most people train far too hard and far too long each day (unless they are serious athletes or professional athletes training for a specific sport or event). Average folks, like you and me, only require about 30 minutes of daily exercise to stay fit for life.

Just get back on track and continue moving forward toward your vision. The key to success is to never lose sight of your vision. Your vision directs every cell of your body to make that vision a reality. And always remember, life is a journey, not a destination.

Jay Robb’s 3-Step Shape-Up Plan: Day 2

STEP 2 – SHAPE YOUR EATING

You are what you eat, (at least in the physical sense), which is why it is critical that you eat natural foods. Exercise is not the best way to lose weight. Exercise is, however, important for toning your muscles and for getting your body physically fit. Your DIET (not exercise) is your best means for losing weight and keeping it off. Never indulge in the erroneous thought that exercise is your weight-loss elixir. It is not. What you eat is what you get. Every bite of food you take and everything you drink creates the physical you. I will show you the foods to eat that will make you look like a million dollars (before taxes), and I will also show you foods that will make you look fluffy, puffy, and stuffy.

Part One:  Get Cleansed

It is a toxic world, and most of the toxins that you come into contact with are manmade. There are thousands of chemicals in your food, in the products you use daily, in the air you breathe, and in some of the beverages you may be drinking. You can do your best to avoid many of these chemicals, but you can’t avoid them all. These chemicals can easily get into your body via your mouth, nose, skin, and lungs. Your body is in a constant battle to neutralize these toxins once they enter your body. If too many enter your body at once, or if the toxins are too concentrated or deadly, you may get sick—or worse—you could die.
Your body can become toxic if you are eating foods that are not completely digested and absorbed into the body. You can also become toxic internally if you are constipated. Believe it or not, I estimate that 99% of Americans are constipated, even though they have at least one bowel movement per day. One is not enough! You should have one to three healthy bowel movements each day. A very common form of toxicity is “fried-fat overload,” which is very common in America due to the fried foods we consume as a nation.
No matter what reason your body is overloaded with toxins, performing a short cleanse is a quick fix that can make you feel like a new person—while dropping 5 to 10 pounds in as little as 3 days. Fruits and vegetables are the best foods to consume to assist your body in the cleansing process. Most fresh fruits and vegetables are low in fat and contain unique nutrients and properties that do not interfere with your body’s ability to detoxify itself.

A simple 3-day cleanse is my FRUIT FLUSH™ 3-Day Detox (you can find this at Baum’s Natural Foods). If you are looking for a time-tested and proven cleanse, you may wish to give it a try.

Part Two:  Get Nourished

Physically, you are what you eat and drink. What you eat, and how much of it, determines what you will look like. That’s a simple fact that you must never forget. Every time you shovel garbage into your mouth, stop and think for a moment how you will look and feel the next day—or the next hour or two. The word that comes to mind is “awful.” When you eat junk, you will eventually look and feel awful. Some people can get away with eating junk longer than others, but in time, we ALL must pay the price. For some it will make them fat. For others, it will make them sick. Others may actually die prematurely from eating the wrong foods because they develop cancer, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, or they suffer a stroke.
There are no guarantees in life except that once you are born, eventually you must physically die. Those are the two facts of life. But in between birth and death you have a lot of living to do and the healthier and happier you are, the more you will enjoy your life. Money can’t buy you good health or a fit body. Eating properly is critical for getting in the best shape of your life. Good food equals good health. Good health equals a good life.
Many of you may be wishing to lose unwanted body fat, and that can only happen if you are willing to eat properly. When you indulge in natural foods, overfilled fat cells shrink like a cheap cotton t-shirt in a hot dryer. Eating properly also keeps you from getting sick. Eating properly helps keep your body firm and fit. Exercising alone is not enough to keep your body fat low. In fact, exercise does very little to help you lose unwanted pounds. Your diet is the way.
An easy way to improve your diet is to consume a Jay Robb Whey Protein Shake for breakfast each day (or as one of your main meals), followed by a balanced lunch and dinner. Lunch and dinner should both be healthy meals containing protein, vegetables, and a healthy fat. Always try to consume organically grown foods.
Below is a carb-controlled protein shake recipe and a list of healthy foods to choose from. For an in depth and comprehensive eating plan, please see my books, The Jay Robb Diet for Men and The Jay Robb Diet for Women.

CARB-CONTROLLED PROTEIN SHAKE
MAY BE USED FOR BREAKFAST, LUNCH, OR DINNER

Jay Robb Banana Protein Shake Recipe
•  12 ounces water
•  1 scoop Jay Robb Whey Protein Vanilla (or flavor of choice)

•  ½ banana
•  1 heaping tablespoon Jay Robb Organic Psyllium Seed Husks
•  20 almonds, raw unsalted or 2 tablespoons raw almond butter
•  5-10 ice cubes

Place all ingredients in blender and mix for 30 seconds until creamy smooth

Foods and Ingredients to Limit or Avoid:

• Fruit juices
•  Cakes
•  Candy
•  Candy bars
•  Coffee
•  Cookies
•  Corn syrup
•  Deep-fried foods
•  Desserts
•  Dried cane juice
•  Evaporated cane juice
•  Farmed fish
•  Foods and beverages containing caffeine
•  Fried foods
•  High-fructose corn syrup
•  Hydrogenated oils
•  Ice cream
•  Margarine
•  Pies
•  Processed cheeses
•  Processed meats
•  Refined oils (corn oil and soybean oil especially)
•  Sucrose
•  Sugar
•  Sugared or diet soft drinks
•  Tea (except herbal teas)

I know this is an extensive list, but the sad truth is that I could make it even longer because the amount of junk food that exists in our world is staggering. It is hard to find real foods anymore and, to me, that is sad. Plus, because junk food is everywhere and is socially acceptable, it makes it very difficult to avoid the junk-food landmines that are out there waiting for you to step on.
Healthy Carbohydrates You May Consume In Limited Quantity (freely consume non-starchy vegetables):

•  Beans (also considered to be a protein food)
•  Fresh fruit
•  Non-starchy vegetables (unlimited)
•  Starchy vegetables
•  Whole Grains that are gluten free
Healthy Fats You May Consume
•  Avocado
•  Butter, raw
•  Cheese, raw (is also considered to be a protein food)
•  Coconut oil

•  Olive oil
•  Raw nuts
•  Raw seeds
Healthy Proteins You May Consume, but in Limited Quantities:
•  Jay Robb Whey Protein (1-3 scoops daily depending on your needs)
•  Beans
•  Cheese
•  Egg whites
•  Full-fat cottage cheese
•  Whole eggs
•  Beef
•  Chicken
•  Duck
•  Fish
•  Turkey
•  Venison
When selecting foods for your diet, be aware that fat is your primary source of fuel. Also, consume at least 50% of you calories RAW.

Jay Robb’s 3-Step Shape-Up Plan: Day 1

Want to look and feel incredible—inside and out? Then I have the perfect plan for you…

Whether you admit it or not, you want to look fantastic. There is nothing wrong with this mindset. It is not an egotistic facet of your existence or a narcissistic adventure. Looking and feeling your best is inherent to your core being. You are naturally programmed to be your best. We all are. And to help you look and feel your best, I offer you my 3-Step Plan that can help you look fabulous from head to toe—inside and out. You will look and feel like a new person in 3 days or less. Don’t hold back. My plan is easy. My plan is powerful. My 3-Step Plan works, and the time to take action is NOW!

STEP 1 – SHAPE YOUR THINKING

Step 1

My job is to get you in the best shape of your life—both inside and out—and the first step is to help you gain control over your thoughts. The way you think determines your destiny in life and is reflected by you and your surroundings. I feel that most people do not realize his or her full potential because they have NO CONTROL over their thoughts. To get in your best shape requires you to have control over your thoughts. Thought control is the trait ALL successful people possess.

We struggle in life because of the way we think. Our thoughts create our reality. What we believe is what we get. Take a look around you right now. Do you like the way you look? Do you like your friends? Your home? Your job? Your financial status? Your life in general? If not, then I have GOOD NEWS! Follow my 3 steps below and it will change your life forever.

Part One:  See the Vision

A vision is like a goal but more vivid because you can clearly see it. A vision is a picture in the mind that you focus on. A vision is a target that you automatically gravitate towards, as long as that vision exists.

To create a vision is easy. Very easy. Just sit down and close your eyes  and let your thoughts settle. Just relax. Now simply dream about looking your best. Don’t be bashful. DREAM! You dreams will soon be your reality, so dream with passion!

Very clearly, see yourself looking your absolute best. Your hair, your face, your body. See the shape, the skin tone and every facet of your body. If you are a woman, see how your tummy will look, your arms, your rear end, your hips and your thighs. If you are a man, see your pecs, your biceps, your abs, your shoulders, your thighs, and your calves. Get a clear picture and keep this in your mind. This vision is a glimpse of what will soon be reality and is what every cell in your body is now VISUALLY PROGRAMMED to create.

The mind is your GPS system and with this vision your body automatically KNOWS what it needs to do to make your vision reality. Without this vision, you are like a ship without a rudder. Without a vision, your mind is in charge, and it will allow you to drift through life in whichever direction your mind wishes to take you. You will be influenced by advertising, friends, parents, loved ones, magazine ads, TV, radio, the news, and the weather. You will float about, never being in control of your actions. Why? Because you have let your mind take you for a ride. You are asleep and mind is in charge. And many times, the ride your mind takes you on is not a dream but a nightmare.

Once you realize your vision, focus on it. Never let this vision fade. See it clearly. Be so in tune with it that at any moment you close your eyes, you can see this vision of yourself, how happy you are, how active you are, how energized you are, and how fantastic you look.

Part Two:  Settle Your Thoughts

Your mind is your friend if you have control over your thoughts. Your mind is your enemy if you have no control over your thoughts. Keeping your thoughts settled and managed is easy. All that is required is for you to be quiet for 15 minutes each day. That’s it. Just like that car insurance commercial says, only in this case, “15 minutes can save you 15 years on your life.” I’m talking about basic meditation here. I’m not teaching a religion or a philosophy. I’m teaching you a technique, a technique that can settle your thoughts, give you peace of mind, end your frustrations, and change your life in just three short days.

Meditation is easy and effective, but you MUST do it daily for the magic to happen. The magic will be subtle, similar to walking in a heavy mist. At first you notice very little but eventually the heavy mist begins to penetrate and soak into your clothing.

To meditate, sit down on a comfortable chair. A firm chair, such as a kitchen chair is ideal. Sit with your back comfortably straight. Close your eyes and place your focus between your eyebrows. Now just breathe, following your breath coming in and going out. That’s it.

To allow yourself to meditate without giving any thought to time, a simple technique I use is to set a kitchen time for 15 minutes and place it in another room. By doing this, I can relax completely. You may also wish to sit on a formal meditation pillow and mat as is practiced in Zen, Buddhism, Hinduism, Transcendental Meditation (TM), Yoga, and various religions worldwide. Again, I am NOT teaching a religion here. I am teaching you a technique that will change your life.

Part Three:  Get Centered

In reality, positive and negative are just two sides of the same coin of life. If there is a positive, there is a negative. The ideal is to be neutral; neither positive nor negative. I have heard a lot of people raving about the power of positive thinking. But what is positive thinking? And what is positive? I feel that positive thinking is really “no thinking” or no thoughts because that is the most positive thing you can do. Trying to think and make things “happen” for you with positive thoughts can be a problem because it sets you up for disappointment. Like goal setting, positive thinking can work, but it may not get you where you need to be in the order you need to get there.

Instead of trying to create things in your life, focus on your vision and let life unfold before you. As life opens doors, walk through them without fear. Goals and positive thinking can sometimes coax you into trying to open a door and walk through it before nature opens it. Timing is everything. In fact, timing is critical to your peace of mind and your success at anything. Just like a fine wine, nothing should come before its time.

Neutral thinking stops you from ever being disappointed. Anytime you have something you are striving for (don’t confuse this with a clear vision that unfolds automatically without you forcing the action), there can be struggles and challenges. I should be doing this, or I should be doing that. Why am I still overweight? Why am I out of shape? These are all thoughts that are silly because they are not a reflection of reality. These thoughts are a reflection of how you “believe” things are. In reality, you are not overweight or underweight. You just weigh a certain number of pounds. That is it. If your current weight does not match your vision, then there are no worries. You are already doing everything you can at the present moment to see your vision become reality. No need to force the action. Just see the vision and step through the doors that life opens along the way.

There is no need to be positive or negative. Be neutral and let life show you the way—and in its order, not yours. Time does not exist. There is only order. Be neutral and surrender to the order of life. Time disappears when you are doing instead of thinking. When you are just doing, and you forget about the doer, life becomes a dream come true. Everything you need to help you realize your vision will come your way—in its own order. Stop beating yourself up. Forget about yourself. See the vision and watch miracles happen—one step at a time.

SafSlim and Baum’s Brand Supplements

Have You Tried the Belly Fat Buster Seen on Dr. Oz?

Saf Slim is backed by science!

In a 16-week, double-blind controlled study conducted at Ohio State University, researchers compared Safflower Oil (SAF) and conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) with 55 overweight, diabetic and post-menopausal women. The findings showed: CLA participants lost more total adipose, however SAF outperformed CLA in measurements of trunk adipose (belly fat). Adiponectin, the hormone that increases metabolism by telling the brain it is not hungry, increased by 20 percent and SAF significantly decreased fasting glucose. These results were obtained with no exercise or diet!

Before you rush out and buy Safflower oil at the grocery store, check your labels! You probably won’t find a high-linoleic safflower oil in the grocery store. The safflower oil commonly found in the grocery store is an oleic oil, a non-essential fatty acid generally used for cooking. It has a higher smoke point for cooking purposes. The safflower oil high in linoleic acid is not designed for cooking because it has a low smoke point.

Saf Slim contains the high-linoleic, essential fatty acid, safflower oil used in all of the studies.  It’s also important to remember that safflower oil is an Omega 6. It’s very important to balance out your 6’s with Omega 3!
(read last week’s blog post about balancing your omega 3’s and 6’s here!)

How Does Baums Private Line of Supplements Measure Up to Other Brands?
