What Can You Do About an Enlarged Prostate?

What Causes an Enlarged Prostate?

The male prostate becomes inflamed and irritated because of elevated levels of a hormone called dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. DHT is normally present throughout the body in small amounts, but as men age, their bodies tend to produce more DHT, which binds to androgen (male hormone) receptors on the prostate and stimulates cellular responses that lead to an enlarged prostate, also called benign prostate hyperplasia, or BPH.

An enlarged prostate causes urinary problems, such as:

  • urinating often
  • slow urination, needing to wait for urination to start
  • urinating during sleep
  • interrupted urination that starts and stops
  • straining or pushing hard in order to urinate
  • leakage or dribbling at the end of urination

One of the problems with BPH is that it is not usually painful. That means many people will leave it untreated thinking that there will not be any negative side effects. This is a very bad assumption. Left untreated BPH can lead to urinary tract infections as well as bladder stones. Also,  BPH is a progressive disease, so the longer it is left untreated, the worse it will get.

What Can You Do About an Enlarged Prostate?

Saw Palmetto – is the most popular and researched prostate herb. Saw Palmetto contains Beta Sitosterol, a powerful compound that interferes with the conversion of testosterone to DHT. Studies show that Saw Palmetto shrinks enlarged prostates & relieves urinary problems.
Other important nutrients for prostate problems

Zinc – an important mineral for many bodily processes, a zinc deficiency predisposes the prostate gland to infection, which could eventually lead to enlargement.

Vitamin B6 – along with zinc, Vitamin B6 regulates the hormone that converts testosterone to DHT, and helps prevent swelling of the prostate.

Lycopene – this extract from tomatoes contains powerful antioxidants that may be able to reduce BPH inflammation and prevent prostate cancer.

Baums carries a variety of prostate formulas, such as Saw Palmetto Pygeum Plus! Get started on one today.

Is Your Calcium Supplement Extracted From Rocks? How Would You Know?

You know you need calcium to build strong bones and teeth but there are so many to choose from it’s hard to know which is the best.  You may have heard that taking chewable antacids is a great way to get your daily calcium.  That would be false.  You may have heard that oyster shell calcium is a great form of calcium.  That would also be false.  Or one of my favorites is that calcium carbonate has the most elemental weight of all calcium.  This one is true, but rocks tend to be heavy.  Calcium carbonate is extracted from rock.  It is the least expensive and most readily available supplemental wise, but carbonate is the least effective from of calcium and should be avoided.

Let’s explore the many ways your body uses calcium.  (it’s not all about bone health).

Calcium’s Role in The Body:

  • Builds and maintains bone and teeth
  • Regulates heart rhythm
  • Eases insomnia
  • Helps regulate the passage of nutrients in and out of cell walls
  • Assists in normal blood clotting
  • Helps maintain proper nerve and muscle function
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Reduces cholesterol
  • Reduces the risk of colon cancer
  • Helps with normal kidney function
  • Synthesizes hormones and enzymes

Did you know that bone continues to grow in density until we are around 30-35 years old?  Within a couple of years, we begin to lose calcium from the bones.  This is universal among humans regardless of sex, race, occupation or economic status.  Because of this, people over 30 can require up to 67 percent more calcium than 16 year olds do.  To maintain good health, we need a calcium rich diet throughout our lives.

Our bones are our calcium reserves.  When there is not enough calcium in our blood streams to perform all of the other functions that calcium is responsible for, our parathyroid glands signal the release of calcium from the bones to keep serum levels stable.  Between 250 and 400 mgs of calcium are lost daily doing normal body functions.

If we take in more calcium than we lose then we have a positive calcium balance.  If we lose more than we take in, then the balance is negative.  A negative balance causes our bodies to go into stress mode triggering calcium being taken straight from the bones.  Since we are not usually aware that our bones are being stripped of calcium, this process can go unrecognized for years and osteoporosis is the dangerous result.

Keeping a positive calcium balance will also help keep you from getting kidney stones and calcium deposits.  Your kidneys actually need calcium to function properly.  If it is not supplied through diet, it is taken from the bones. When calcium is supplied to the body from the bones, it can actually cause kidney stones and calcium deposits.  The intake of adequate amounts of calcium, magnesium, vitamin D and vitamin B6 is crucial to the prevention of kidney stones.

Which Form of Calcium is Best?

Here’s what to look for in a supplement:

Calcium Carbonate:  (inc. oyster shell) Least effective form. Should be avoided.  Encourages acidemia (too alkaline), bone loss, kidney stones, calcium deposits & bone spurs. Interferes with digestion. Molecules are too large to be utilized effectively.  High lead levels.

Calcium Asparatate:  Combination of calcium and aspartic acid which transports calcium to proper body sites for specific functions.  Readily absorbed by the body and has the dual advantage of releasing calcium and aspartic acid into the blood stream.  Easily absorbed, assimilated, and utilized.

Calcium Chelate:  Calcium bound with vegetable protein for better absorption in the small intestine and easy release into the blood.  Highly absorbable and is retained longer in the body.

Calcium Citrate:  Highly soluble, calcium bound to vitamin C.  Won’t cause kidney or gall stones or reduce acidity.
Great pick!

Calcium Lactate: Highly soluble calcium bound with lactic acid.  Aids absorption in the small intestines.

Hydroxyapetite: (micro-crystalline):  Whole bone matrix extract.  Does not get heated or treated with chemical solvents.  Extremely bioavailable form.  Exceptional absorption and utilization.  Prevents bone loss and restores mineral content to bone.  A wise choice for those at risk for Osteoporosis.

Calcium isn’t the only thing keeping your bones strong.  Calcium needs help if it’s going to get into your bones.  You need to make sure that what you buy is going to work!  It needs to have adequate amounts of magnesium & vitamin D for absorption.

Bone Strength Take Care has consistently been one of Baum’s Best Selling Calcium Supplements!  The tablets are small, easy to swallow and easy to break if you need to. The dosage is just 3 per day, one with lunch, two with dinner, and you’re done!

It’s A New Year! Another Year Older But Much, Much Wiser!

Time flies, so they say, but with every year that passes, we get a little bit older. And when we get older, our bodies get older too. Some of us look it, some of us don’t. Some of us feel it, some of us don’t. Why is that? Well genetics plays a bit part in it, but so does your environment and lifestyle.

Stress, diet, lack of exercise and environmental pollutants are all major contributors to early aging. Luckily there is something you can do right now to undo some of the harmful effects of all of these things. Keeping yourself healthy, balanced, and free of toxic build-up are ways to stay vital into your very senior years.
How Would You Like to Increase Longevity?

Strengthen the immune system.

From stress to pollutants to disease-causing bacteria, the list of invisible enemies that can damage our health is huge. And the immune system, our bodies’ frontline defense, deals with all of them. A strong immune system can mean the difference between life and death when we are older. To stay finely tuned, the immune system requires proper nutrition, which can include supplements, such as vitamins, antioxidants and herbal formulas that keep it strong.

Maintain cardiovascular health.

Cardiovascular health is essential for optimal performance and longevity. The heart and vascular system distribute blood, which provides oxygen, carries nutrients, and removes waste from cells. When the heart and lungs are strong, the body can obtain more oxygen; remove more waste products and perform at higher levels for longer periods of time. We can protect our cardiovascular health by using specific supplements that support this system, including Omega 3 Fish Oil, herbs such as Hawthorn, Vitamin E, and various minerals and amino acids.

Prevent bone loss.

In our skeletal system, bone is constantly being broken down and rebuilt by bone-building cells called osteoblasts. A healthy skeletal system is vital in any endeavor since it protects the internal organs, provides support for the muscles, and gives us the incredible range of motion we require. With age, our bones gradually become weaker. Fortunately exercise and proper diet, including supplements such as calcium, vitamin D3, magnesium and vitamin K2, can help slow the loss of bone mass.

Restore hormone levels.

With age, levels of many of our hormones decline, including growth hormone. This can result in slowed mental alertness and memory; declines in strength, endurance, and lean mass; lowered sex drive in men; and even those telltale signs of aging—lines and wrinkles in our skin. Researchers theorize that by naturally increasing levels of hormones with supplementation, our bodies’ hormones, along with their benefits, may be restored to youthful peaks. Hormone testing is a great place to start. When you know your levels, supplementing with progesterone creams or testosterone boosters can make a big difference in how you feel.

Prevent free radical damage.

Imperfect diets and active lifestyles take a toll, not just on our muscles, but on our entire bodies, by increasing the release of free radicals. Fortunately, the use of antioxidants may help minimize the amount of free radicals that damage cells. The proper use of antioxidants may improve recovery time, reduce muscle soreness, postpone fatigue, boost immune functioning, and perhaps even defy the aging process. There have been studies on the benefits of Resveratrol, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Vitamins A, C, E and Selenium on their antioxidant and anti-aging benefits.

Detoxify the body.

You change the oil in your car to keep it running smoothly, but how often do you think about your liver? A clean and healthy liver allows our bodies to quickly eliminate toxins and waste products that otherwise get stored in our tissues, making us sluggish, achy, and foggy-headed. Key herbs such as milk thistle, burdock, and dandelion root support the detoxifying abilities of the liver and keep it healthy.

Not sure about detoxing? We can help!

Are You Taking Vitamin D3?

It is not always practical to get your vitamin D from sunshine, and quite difficult to get adequate amounts from your diet so for many people, a vitamin D3 supplement is a great way to ensure adequate levels of this important protector are always available in your bloodstream. There is a vast body of science showing the many health benefits of Vitamin D

  • Maintains Your Calcium Balance
    • Maintenance of blood calcium levels within a narrow range is vital for normal functioning of the nervous system, as well as for bone growth, and maintenance of bone density.
  • Aids Your Cell Differentiation
    • Cellular differentiation results in the specialization of cells for specific functions in your body. While cellular proliferation is essential for growth and wound healing, uncontrolled proliferation of cells with mutations may lead to diseases like cancer.
  • Boosts Your Immunity
    • Vitamin D is a potent immune system modulator that may enhance your immunity and inhibit the development of autoimmune diseases such as, Parkinson’s Disease and MS.
  • Has a Role in Insulin Secretion
    • The active form of vitamin D plays a role in insulin secretion under conditions of increased insulin demand.
  • Blood Pressure Regulation
    • Adequate vitamin D levels may be important for decreasing the risk of high blood pressure.
  • Vitamin D and Mood
    • Higher dosages of Vitamin D have been shown to help relieve symptoms of SAD (seasonal affective disorder) such as depression and lethargy.
  •  See your doctor about having your Vitamin D levels checked.

How much Vitamin D is recommended?

Vitamin D Council recommended amounts Based on the body’s indicated daily vitamin D usage, Vitamin D Council recommends the following amounts of supplemental vitamin D3 per day in the absence of proper sun exposure.

  • Healthy children under 1 year – 1,000 IU.
  • Healthy children over 1 year – 1,000 IU per every 25 lbs of body weight.
  • Healthy adults and adolescents – at least 5,000 IU.

Are You Feeling a Bit Stressed Out?

We have the perfect thing for you! If you haven’t tried L-theanine, you’re missing out on one of nature’s most effective anti-anxiety remedies that is safe to use without unwanted side effects!  You’ll feel calmer but you won’t be tired or foggy-headed! In fact, it helps you to think more clearly.
Read all about it, then come and get it!

L-theanine and Relaxation

Research on human volunteers has demonstrated that L-theanine creates a sense of relaxation approximately 30-40 minutes after you take it. L-theanine directly stimulates the production of alpha brain waves, creating a state of deep relaxation and mental alertness similar to what is achieved through meditation.

L-theanine and Depression

L-theanine has a significant effect on the release or reduction of neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, resulting in improved memory and learning ability. L-theanine may also influence emotions due to its effects on the increased release of dopamine. Dopamine is a vital neurotransmitter. Too little or too much can cause wide-ranging problems from mood disorders to Parkinson’s disease. Your body produces it in sufficient quantities, but sometimes lifestyle factors interfere and your brain might need a little help. When your body’s level of dopamine is on target, you are happy. You can process pleasure, think clearly, you are motivated and have the desire to accomplish things.

L-theanine and Stress and Anxiety

Stress and anxiety are debilitating conditions that upset the balance of our hormones leading to a loss of our well-being, performance, and even lifespan. Stress impairs the immune system, leaving us vulnerable to opportunistic infections, and can cause depression. People under stress can mitigate many of the harmful effects of stress with L-theanine.

L-theanine Does Not Cause Drowsiness

One of the greatest benefits of L-theanine is that you can use it without becoming sedated in the process. L-theanine doesn’t make one drowsy, nor does it promote sleep because this amino acid does not produce theta waves in the brain.  It is in many sleep formulas though, to promote relaxation so that you can fall asleep more easily.  It helps quiet the mind.

L-theanine is most effective in the range of 100-200 mg on an empty stomach, with the effect being felt within 30 minutes and lasting for 8-10 hours. FDA recommends a maximum dose of 1200 mg daily, although the reason for this limit is not clear, due to its well documented safety.

BE READY for all the stress being thrown your way! Stop in to Baums and try a sample of L-Theanine and enjoy your day! Don’t forget Baums brand L-theanine is 20% off this month!

All Vitamins Are NOT Created Equal!

In a perfect world all of us would get all of the nutrients we need for optimal health from fresh, healthful foods. In reality however, this is often difficult, if not impossible. In our highly chemically polluted and stress-filled world, our nutritional requirements have been steadily increasing, but the number of calories we require has been decreasing as our levels of physical activity has declined. This means that we need to somehow get more nutrients into our body with less food. At the same time many of our foods are depleted of certain nutrients. Modern farming methods have resulted in soils that are lacking in selenium and other nutrients. Add to this extensive processing, improper storage, and other factors, and its little wonder that many of the foods that reach our tables cannot meet our nutritional needs. Getting even the recommended daily intake of vitamins from today’s diet has become quite hard to do. This means for optimum health, it is necessary to take nutrients in the form of supplements.

Vitamin supplements can be divided into two groups: Synthetic and natural. Synthetic vitamins are vitamins produced in laboratories from chemicals that are the mirror image of their counterparts found in nature. Natural vitamins are derived from food sources. The body recognizes them as food and utilizes them more efficiently. Supplements that are not labeled natural also may also include coal tars, artificial coloring, preservatives, sugars, and starch, as well as other additives. You should beware of these harmful elements when you purchase any supplements. Even vitamins that state that they are natural, may not be extracted from whole food sources. It is important to read labels carefully and to remember that you get what you pay for. Don’t expect to feel more vitality when taking a simple, mass produced, low-potency “one a day” that you picked up in the vitamin aisle at the local grocery or drug store. You may as well take the money you spent and flush it right down the toilet because with the coatings and binders used during manufacturing these synthetic multis, they aren’t going to break down and absorb anyway. The health food industry is in the business of health and wellness. Please purchase your supplements from a health food store where the employees are knowledgeable about what they sell. Make sure to buy only whole food based, certified vitamins. Better health starts with a high potency all natural multivitamin/mineral supplement with high levels of antioxidants to protect and nourish your body. Most of the drug store variety vitamins have such low levels of nutrients that it amazes me that they can market them the way they do.

What About The RDA?

Recommended Dietary Allowances for vitamins and minerals have been prepared by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council since 1941. These guidelines were originally developed to reduce the rates of severe nutritional deficiency diseases such as scurvy (deficiency of vitamin C), pellagra (deficiency of niacin), and beriberi (deficiency of vitamin B1). Another critical point is that the RDA’s were designed to serve as the basis for evaluating the adequacy of diets of groups of people, not individuals. Individuals simply vary too widely in their nutritional requirements. As stated by the Food and Nutrition Board, “Individuals with special nutritional needs are not covered by the RDA’s.” A tremendous amount of scientific research indicates that the “optimal” level for many nutrients may be much higher than their current RDA. The RDAs focus only on the prevention of nutritional deficiencies in population groups, and do not define “optimal” intake for an individual.

Other factors the RDAs do not adequately take into consideration are environmental and lifestyle factors which can destroy vitamins and bind minerals. For example, even the Food and Nutrition Board acknowledges that smokers require at least twice the amount of vitamin C compared to nonsmokers. But what about other nutrients and smoking? And what about the effects of alcohol consumption, food additives, heavy metals (lead, mercury, etc.), carbon monoxide, and other chemicals associated with our modern society that are known to interfere with nutrient function? Dealing with the hazards of modern living may be another reason many people take supplements. Just this May there was a big story on the front page of The Times titled “The Government Says You Can’t Breathe Our Air” reporting about the horrible air quality in the region. Air that we breathe everyday. Now more than ever it’s vitally important to saturate your diet with fresh produce (organic whenever possible) and whole grains. Meat and dairy are great sources of vitamins, minerals and protein, but they also contain pesticides, fertilizers, hormones and antibiotics unless the animals are organically raised. Unfortunately most of us don’t eat that way.?

What Should Everyone Take Daily?

If you walked into Baum’s  for the first time and you’ve never taken a supplement before in your life and need to know where to start, this is not only what we suggest, but what industry leaders suggest everyone take whether you’re 12 years old or 80 years old.

  • A high potency all natural multivitamin/mineral complex. They help make up for nutrient deficiencies lost in today’s diets.
  • Essential fatty acids for proper heart, brain & vision function.
  • Digestive enzymes to help break down the foods you eat so they can be absorbed by the body more efficiently. This is the foundation for a vibrant healthy body.
  • Probiotics help maintain your immune system by keeping bad bacteria at bay.

If there are other health concerns you may have, be sure to consult with our staff to find a more natural approach to treatment.

Stay calm throughout the holidays with GABA

What is GABA?

GABA (Gamma amino butyric acid) is one of the non-essential amino acids that is synthesized in the brain from another amino acid, Glutamic acid. In the brain it acts as a neurotransmitter (chemical messenger that transmits signals from one cell to another) that works efficiently for calming your mood and reducing anxiety. It also plays an important role in improving brain function. This amino acid not only shows soothing effects on the brain but also slows down the heart rate and regulates breathing. It also acts as a sleep inducing agent. In your brain, if the level of GABA declines you will become anxious and uneasy. GABA can help you to relax. Reduced secretion of GABA in the brain may also lead to a number of neurological problems such as sleep disorders and epilepsy/seizures.

GABA has the ability to reduce the over stimulation of brain cells, inducing relaxation and relieving nervous tension.

Health benefits of GABA

Anti-Stress agent

During a stressful situation, it can help the brain function by blocking the stress related messages that are reaching the brain, hence it can be useful in decreasing emotional stress and hypertension. GABA can also be beneficial in reducing the symptoms of hopelessness.

GABA supplementation has shown to have positive calming effects there by reducing stress and aggravation.

Your Brain’s Natural Calming Agent:

GABA is the natural calming agent in the brain that helps to promote a good nights sleep as well as improving sleep quality. GABA is also effective in reducing mood swings in females during the menstrual cycle and helpful for easing depression.

Stimulating growth Hormone secretion

GABA has been used to enhance the secretion of growth hormone from the pituitary gland (master gland of the body that affects most of the hormones). Since human growth hormone is involved in fat metabolism, its deficiency causes accumulation of fat around the hips and waist. Another problem associated with a low level of growth hormone is reduced thinking capability. In these conditions GABA indirectly improves physical and mental performance as well as decreases body fat by increasing the level of growth hormone.

Functions in different health problems

This amino acid can suppress the activity of brain cells so it may be effective in treatment of certain over stimulated brain disorders such as attention deficit disorder and epilepsy.

Deficiencies in GABA can also lead to:

  • Anxiety symptoms
  • Irritability
  • Headaches
  • Hypertension
  • Lower sex drive
  • Depression

Increase your GABA

The best way to get GABA is through supplementation.  It can be taken in its pure amino acid form or can produced in the brain by L-Theanine.  While it is possible to increase the body’s GABA supply through food sources, usually this is not enough to see any positive effects.

Which GABA supplement is the best?

Many companies offer GABA supplements, but which one is the best? Many of these products contain too much or too little GABA, require too many pills, are too expensive, or are of poor quality.

Natural Factors PharmaGABA supplies 100mg of pure GABA in a delicious chewable wafer. The product was formulated by Dr. Micheal Murray, one of the world’s leading authorities on natural medicine.

Baum’s Natural Foods carries Natural Factors products including PharmaGABA. Visit one of our three locations and find out more about PharmaGABA today!

Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Stop Taking Your Fish Oil

By Michael A. Smith, MD, Life Extension

Despite the flawed conclusions of a recent meta-analysis claiming fish oils do nothing for your heart, we strongly suggest that you continue as usual with your daily omega-3 supplement.

The study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, co-authored by  Seung-Kwon Myung, MD, of the Center for Cancer Prevention and Detection in Ilsan, Korea, reviewed 14 trials involving 20,485 adults ages 40 to 80 with a history of heart disease.

FishOilThe meta-analysis reported throughout mainstream media is wrong and is on the verge of malpractice. If your doctor ever tells you to stop taking fish oils … find another doctor fast … one who is not blinded by conventional “wisdom.”

The researchers failed in their analysis because of their inclusion of poorly designed clinical trials. Let’s look at three reasons for rejecting their conclusion that fish oils are ineffective for preventing a second cardiac event in people with known heart disease.

What you are about to read is proof of the authors’ bias toward toxic Big Pharma chemicals and why you should not listen to these doctors.

They included low dose studies

Half of the studies included in the meta-analysis used an omega-3 dose of less than 1000 milligrams daily. That is way too low. We suggest for our clients between 2 and 4 grams a day. Using a low dose is a common strategy employed by researchers who want to discredit the effectiveness of supplements.

Take for instance the randomized, placebo controlled trial that studied the effects of EPA and DHA on the heart. In that study, the researchers used 1.8 grams of combined EPA and DHA and found that this dose was associated with a 10% lower rate of cardiac events, 12% lower rate of non-fatal infarctions and 10% lower rate of cardiac deaths.

So why did the authors include studies with less than 1 gram of omega-3 fats in their meta-analysis? Because they want to discredit supplements as ineffective. With readily available fish oils out of the way, more people will turn to Big Pharma’s toxic chemicals.

They included studies of short duration

The conclusions made by the authors of this flawed meta-analysis used studies that were only two years long. This is not long enough for secondary prevention trials in people with previous heart conditions. A longer timeframe is necessary to draw any conclusions.

They used a limited number of studies

Only 20 of 3,635 studies the authors examined were used in this meta-analysis. This is a very limited representation of the research on fish oil for cardiovascular disease events.

And why would they use only 20 studies in their analysis? Could it be because they purposely searched for studies that were under-dosed — meaning less than 1 gram a day?

Any credible scientist or doctor wanting to study omega-3 fish oils and the effects on the heart would know to use a daily dose of 1.5 grams or more. And that’s exactly the dose that most fish oil studies use.

fish_oil_pillsTake your fish oil supplements

The current meta-analysis making its way through mainstream media outlets represents the use of fish oil in suboptimal dosages, over a short period of time, and largely in populations with a history of cardiovascular disease.

The results of this new study conflict with other meta-analyses that have found fish oil supplementation beneficial in relationship to cardiovascular events. Also, studies examining higher dose fish oil have found a protective effect against cardiovascular events and risk factor reduction.*

What should you buy?

Always remember, if your fish oil smells fishy, it’s probably rancid and you should throw it out. Are you bothered by nasty fish burps?  Try Nordic Naturals brand. It’s as clean as you’re going to find and guaranteed to not cause burping.

#FoodThanks for Thanksgiving

Reblogged from The Field Position

Our nation’s Thanksgiving holiday presents a prime opportunity to help remind people to “thank a farmer” for the food on their table. Many Americans this month are using their personal Facebook pages and Twitter feeds to say what they’re thankful for this season.

“Farmers represent less than 2 percent of the population,” says Darin Grimm, president of the AgChat Foundation, a 100 percent volunteer organization that aims to empower farmers and ranchers to “agvocate” via social media platforms. “#FoodThanks helps us engage with the other 98% who are not directly involved in agriculture. It’s also an opportunity for us to thank the many people involved in getting food from our farms to tables across America.”

Members of the ag and food communities are encouraged to tweet, post and blog about #foodthanks, especially on November 22 as Thanksgiving becomes top of mind for much of the country.

You can become part of the #foodthanks campaign. Last year, more than 800 people participated in the campaign by blogging, adding the #foodthanks twibbon to their avatar photo and sharing more than 2,000 Twitter posts.

What Will You Do This Christmas?

(David Evans, 11-2011)

As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods; merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. This year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. It’s time to think outside the box…

Everyone gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local hair salon or barber?

What about a Gym membership? It’s appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some health improvement.

Who wouldn’t appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, American owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates.

Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plunking downShop smarl. Shop local. big money on a Chinese made flat-screen? Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course instead.

There are a bazillion owner-run restaurants, all offering gift certificates. And, if your intended isn’t the fancy eatery sort, what about a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint?

Remember, this isn’t about big national chains, this is about supporting your home town Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open.

How many people couldn’t use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy?

Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services of a local cleaning lady for a day.

My computer could use a tune-up, and I KNOW I can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running.

Looking for something more personal? Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, and pottery and beautiful wooden boxes.

You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets so that China can build another glittering city. Christmas is now about caring about us, encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams. And, when we care about other Americans, we care about our communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn’t imagine. THIS is the new American Christmas . Spread the Christmas cheer in your own community!…..

The mission of the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.

Baums is pleased to be an official Toys For Tots drop off site! Please help us help the less fortunate children in our community have a great Christmas this year! Donation boxes are being picked up early this year. (December 12th) so be sure and get them in early!
Thanks for your support of this wonderful program!

As always, we at Baums are very thankful for your business! We wouldn’t be here without you!

Have a safe, healthy, and happy holiday season from all of us to all of you!
