A Holiday Gift Guide for Giving Better Stuff

I thought this was a lovely post about gift giving. I’m glad to see more people realizing the importance of quality gifting instead of quantitative.

Stef McDonald

I heard someone joke about going to the local thrift store the day after Christmas to donate the just-unwrapped and unwanted bounty of gifts. Yes, we definitely have a collective problem with too much stuff (and too much waste), which is just one of the reasons why it’s great to give experience gifts or contributions to good causes in the recipient’s name. But sometimes the best gift really does come in a package you can hand to your loved one for opening. For gift-giving that’s more meaningful, ’tis the season to:

Give twice.

When you buy items from thrift stores or auction sites that benefit nonprofits, your dollars support their work. A few favorites even have online shops, including Goodwill and Housing Works. Also, sites like Bidding for Good offer products that benefit a variety of organizations.

Another way to give back is by buying from gift shops for museums and…

What Exactly is Natural Healing?

Originally from Dr. Richard Schulze, Nov. 2010

This is easily seen with a cut. You cut your skin and you bleed. Your blood eventually clots and you form a scab. Your tissue and skin then starts regrowing. Eventually, the scab falls off and you are miraculously healed! Even though we take this basic healing function for granted, no medical doctor and no hospital can ever do this for you.

On a microscopic level, your body may be invaded and infected by foreign pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites. Your body has numerous organs, systems and blood cells to take care of any unwanted visitors. You have white blood cells like macrophages and certain T cells that work to kill the invader immediately, and immune chemicals like interleukin and interferon that help speed up these cells. Other cells create chemical poisons to kill off the invaders in the same way your B cells use immunoglobulin to create specific antibodies that attack foreign pathogens.

Without a doubt, our bodies are amazing repair machines ready to take on any illness or disease. But eventually, because of genetics, lifestyle and just plain aging, your body may not be up to the task of healing or repairing you. This is typically when a person seeks outside help, usually from a medical doctor.

A medical doctor’s approach is to take on the healing themselves, fighting and killing the disease with a barrage of chemical drugs and sometimes even getting the body functioning again by performing surgical procedures. Medical intervention can be harsh and extreme.  It can leave you with irreversible surgical impairment when it involves your organs being altered or removed. It is the form of healing for people who, for whatever reason, refuse to make any healthy lifestyle modifications.

On the other hand, Natural Healing is for people who are able to make healthy and positive lifestyle changes. By raising your overall level of health, you can dramatically increase your body’s ability to heal and repair itself.
“You can heal yourself of anything, just STOP doing what is making you sick and START doing what will Create Powerful Health.”

Natural Healing is simply helping your body to become stronger and healthier, so it becomes a more powerful and effective healing and repairing machine. With most people, it doesn’t take much to get your body to heal illness or disease. It could simply be a lack of nutrition caused by  poor food choices or a buildup of sludge in the body, causing everything from constipation and coronary-artery blockage to dementia. Many people just need a good cleanup and a new, healthy lifestyle, and they’re on their way to health. However, many people who spend years damaging their bodies, ignoring their ill health and disregarding disease warning signs can find themselves in a serious disease crisis and they need more aggressive health programs.

Regardless of the level of a person’s illness, natural healing can be as powerful as medical intervention. Many people are able to regain their health, by simply leading a healthy lifestyle. Often the healing results are in balance with how many positive healthy changes a person is willing to make.

Sure, for some, it took a lot of work, but when you compare it to the possible stress, trauma, pain, and expense of medical intervention, for most people, it’s a no-brainer.

To sum all this up, Natural Healing is a style of healing where you assist your body in charging up its powerful self-healing ability by creating a lifestyle in which you eliminate things that create disease and increase those things that create powerful health. When your body is healthy and strong, it can heal, repair and rebuild all by itself.

An old Chinese proverb says: “Focus on the good to eliminate the bad.” In the same way, Natural Healing is about focusing on creating powerful health and letting your body do what it knows how to do, which is repair and heal you of most anything.

Holiday Stress? Not This Year!

Between deadlines, holiday shopping budgets, crowded stores, long lines, and the odd family dust-up, stress is pretty much a given this time of year. But even if it feels like your stress is insurmountable, managing it is possible—and it’s easier than you probably think.

This increased stress manifests in all sorts of emotional and physical ways, from sadness and lack of motivation to headaches and muscle tension. More than half of the Americans surveyed also reported fatigue and lying awake at night, and 60 percent reported irritability or anger.

Stress screamSupplements can also help you deal with stress, and magnesium is the top stress-buster! It is estimated that 70 percent of U.S. citizens are deficient in magnesium, which could be one reason why so many people have difficulty dealing with stress.

B-complex vitamins are also a good idea, as they help boost production of serotonin and other “feel good” chemicals in the brain.

Other options include Holy Basil, which helps reduce cortisol levels (stress hormones that make you store fat), and Licorice Root or Siberian Ginseng tinctures or supplements to offer adrenal support. Strong adrenals keep your energy levels high!

L-Theanine is a wonderful supplement to use when you are feeling frazzled. L-Theanine is a compound found in green and black tea that has a wonderfully calming effect on the brain without making you feel dopey or drowsy. You can take it during the daytime or at night to help stop your mind from going a mile-a-minute. While it won’t make you sleepy, it will help you settle down so you can go to sleep.

As stress piles up this holiday season and you start to feel pulled in 20 different directions, don’t forget to take a few minutes for yourself each day. It’s important to unwind and relax so that you don’t end up sick through the holidays. That’s no fun for anyone!

Pick up what you need at you favorite Baums store today and enjoy yourself this holiday season!

Are You Tired of Having A Bad Hair Day, Everyday?

Hair, skin and nails can speak volumes about one’s health, and  can be a reflection of inner health most of the time. Yet, sometimes no matter what steps a person takes, their hair and skin look  dry, dull and older than desired. This can be the result of stress, excess sun exposure, insufficient antioxidants, metabolic conditions and many other factors. This does not necessarily mean that a person is not healthy on the inside, yet they may not fully embody that radiant glow from within.

Supplementing your diet with nutritious foods filled with vitamins and other nutrients is beneficial for your skin, nails and hair, as vitamins help to keep your body healthy and strong. Also, they can help numerous conditions that can affect the health of your skin, nails and hair.

Baums Carries an array of great formulas that incorporate vitamins, amino acids, herbs and other nutrients to help regain strong, healthy  hair, skin and nails. Many of these formulas include the following:

Vitamin C is an antioxidant vitamin. Antioxidants are responsible for neutralizing free radicals, unstable molecules that may possibly harm your skin, nails and hair, making them become weak. Vitamin C helps to form collagen, a protein that is used to make skin and other connective tissues. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, low intake of vitamin C may result in dry hair and skin.

Biotin, sometimes referred to as “Vitamin H”, is essential for healthy skin, hair and nails. The University of Maryland Medical Center states that a diet low in biotin may result in symptoms such as dry, scaly skin or hair loss. Biotin is an essential nutrient, as it helps  hair and nails that are thin or brittle. It is widely used to help with hair loss and stimulate hair growth in chemotherapy patients.  Biotin also helps our bodies to break down fats, protein and carbohydrates.

A deficiency of Vitamin B12 can lead to anemia, which stunts hair growth.  Several other B vitamins help with hair loss or slow hair growth as well. Panthenol, or Vitamin B5 is often used externally in shampoos and other hair products to help increase thickness.

Vitamin E is yet another antioxidant vitamin, effective in reducing damage that free radicals may cause your skin, nails and hair. Natural News reports that vitamin E helps to keep your hair healthy and aids in the prevention of hair loss by stimulating capillary growth and hair follicles, which are responsible for growing hair. Also, vitamin E encourages healthy hair growth by enhancing blood flow in your scalp.

Vitamin A  is also an antioxidant vitamin. A deficiency can be manifested as poor wound healing and acne. Vitamin A helps dry skin, ensuring that your skin is moist and hydrated.

The most well-known herb used for adding beauty and luster to the hair when taken orally is horsetail. Named for its long brush-like appearance, this herb is packed with a nutrient called silica. Silica is a substance that strengthens bones, nails, skin & hair. The presence of silica in our bodies can maintain the luster in our hair, the strength in our nails and the tone of our skin. It adds resilience to the hair by fortifying it with strength and thereby lessening breakage and thinning. Silica also is known for increasing shine and body. Use daily for brittle or unhealthy hair.

Rosemary is an excellent herb to use topically to promote hair growth and increase scalp health. When applied to the scalp rosemary increases circulation and helps to gently remove excess sebum and dandruff, which can inhibit healthy hair growth.

Lavender is another herb that enhances the beauty of the hair. Lavender helps increase shine and gently cleanse deposits that dull the hair.

Hops are not only a main ingredient in beer, they also make an excellent natural hair conditioner and softener when applied topically. The herb also contains silica so it helps fortify the hair from within to add strength and resilience.

Essential Fatty Acids—Want healthy skin, hair and nails? Dr, Andrew Weil says: Try taking the essential fatty acid gamma linolenic acid (GLA). This essential fatty acid offers a wide range of benefits, from acting as an effective anti-inflammatory agent to promoting the healthy growth of skin, hair and nails. GLA can also be used effectively for other conditions such as brittle nails and hair, arthritis, autoimmune disorders, and premenstrual syndrome.

Unfortunately, GLA is hard to come by in the diet, so supplements are necessary. Three good, natural sources are Evening Primrose oil, Black Currant oil and Borage oil. Do not expect immediate results when taking GLA: it takes six to eight weeks to see changes after adding GLA to the diet.

Skin’s Best Friend, Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance within the body that  hydrates the skin. Young skin is smooth and elastic and contains a large amount of hyaluronic acid that helps the skin look healthy. As we grow older, the ability of the skin to produce hyaluronic acid decreases and the amount of HA begins to fall. Since hyaluronic acid helps to bind water, the ability of the skin to retain water also declines with age. As a result, the skin becomes drier, thinner, and less able to restore itself. The loss of skin fullness also means that the skin becomes looser. This leads to wrinkling and an older appearance. Using a topical HA serum can have dramatic effects on skin health.  Hyalogic makes a Hyaluronic Acid Cream as well as a Hydrating Mist that work wonders on dry, dull skin!

Everything mentioned in this article is available at Baums Natural Foods stores. Stop in and check out our great Hair, Skin and Nail formulas as well as our cosmetic section .  Give your body what it needs to look and feel your best everyday!

GMO Facts

Source: The Non-GMO Project

Frequently Asked Questions

Boy eating corn XSmallWhat are GMOs?
GMOs, or “genetically modified organisms,” are plants or animals that have been genetically engineered with DNA from bacteria, viruses or other plants and animals. These experimental combinations of genes from different species cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding.

Virtually all commercial GMOs are engineered to withstand direct application of herbicide and/or to produce an insecticide. Despite biotech industry promises, none of the GMO traits currently on the market offer increased yield, drought tolerance, enhanced nutrition, or any other consumer benefit.

Meanwhile, a growing body of evidence connects GMOs with health problems, environmental damage and violation of farmers’ and consumers’ rights.

Are GMOs safe?
Most developed nations do not consider GMOs to be safe. In more than 60 countries around the world, including Australia, Japan, and all of the countries in the European Union, there are significant restrictions or outright bans on the production and sale of GMOs. In the U.S., the government has approved GMOs based on studies conducted by the same corporations that created them and profit from their sale. Increasingly, Americans are taking matters into their own hands and choosing to opt out of the GMO experiment.

Are GMOs labeled?
Unfortunately, even though polls consistently show that a significant majority of Americans want to know if the food they’re purchasing contains GMOs, the powerful biotech lobby has succeeded in keeping this information from the public. In the absence of mandatory labeling, the Non-GMO Project was created to give consumers the informed choice they deserve.

Where does the Non-GMO Project come in?
The Non-GMO Project is a non-profit organization with a mission of protecting the non-GMO food supply and giving consumers an informed choice. We offer North America’s ONLY third party verification for products produced according to rigorous best practices for GMO avoidance (for more info, click here). Our strategy is to empower consumers to make change through the marketplace. If people stop buying GMOs, companies will stop using them and farmers will stop growing them.

Do Americans want non-GMO foods and supplements?
Polls consistently show that a significant majority of North Americans would like to be able to tell if the food they’re purchasing contains GMOs (a 2012 Mellman Group poll found that 91% of American consumers wanted GMOs labeled). And, according to a recent CBS/New York Times poll, 53% of consumers said they would not buy food that has been genetically modified. The Non-GMO Project’s seal for verified products will, for the first time, give the public an opportunity to make an informed choice when it comes to GMOs.

How common are GMOs?
In the U.S., GMOs are in as much as 80% of conventional processed food. Click here for a current list of GMO risk crops.

Why does the Non-GMO Project verify products that have a low risk of containing GMOs?
Some ingredients that seem low-risk may have less-visible high-risk ingredients.  Take, for example, dried fruit.  Raisins and similar fruit are sometimes packed with a small quantity of oil to keep them moist.  This oil, when used, is sometimes high-GMO-risk.  As such, it is critical that we do take the time to look carefully at ingredient spec sheets during the verification process, to ensure that risks like this are effectively mitigated, even in apparently low-risk products.

Contamination incidents have occurred with seemingly “low-risk” products (rice, starling corn, flax). Non-GMO Project Verification supports manufacturers in being able to quickly and proactively respond to unexpected contamination issues.

Verifying only high-risk products puts a heavy burden on consumers to know what products are at risk of containing GMOs.  Many people, even in the world of Natural Foods, don’t know what a GMO is, let alone which crops and processed ingredients are high-risk.  As such, labeling only products that contain high-risk ingredients could give an unfair competitive advantage to products that contain ingredients containing corn, soy, etc.  Taking the cereal aisle for our example, if we verified only high-risk products, a shopper might see the seal on a box of verified corn flakes, but not on the wheat-based cereal box next to them, produced with the same high standards by the same company. This could leave them thinking the corn flakes were non-GMO, but that they should avoid the wheat product, even though there’s no GMO wheat on the market.  Given the lack of understanding of the issue, this presents some serious issues.

Through verifying low-risk products, the Non-GMO Project’s work builds consumer interest and industry investment in Non-GMO, even for crops that aren’t genetically engineered yet.  Biotech is constantly working to patent and commercialize new organisms (salmon, apples, etc.), and the more companies that have committed to Non-GMO production, the more resistance these new developments will see prior to release.

What are the impacts of GMOs on the environment?
Over 80% of all GMOs grown worldwide are engineered for herbicide tolerance. As a result, use of toxic herbicides like Roundup has increased 15 times since GMOs were introduced. GMO crops are also responsible for the emergence of “super weeds” and “super bugs:’ which can only be killed with ever more toxic poisons like 2,4-D (a major ingredient in Agent Orange). GMOs are a direct extension of chemical agriculture, and are developed and sold by the world’s biggest chemical companies. The long-term impacts of GMOs are unknown, and once released into the environment these novel organisms cannot be recalled.

How do GMOs affect farmers?
Because GMOs are novel life forms, biotechnology companies have been able to obtain patents with which to restrict their use. As a result, the companies that make GMOs now have the power to sue farmers whose fields are contaminated with GMOs, even when it is the result of inevitable drift from neighboring fields. GMOs therefore pose a serious threat to farmer sovereignty and to the national food security of any country where they are grown, including the United States.

How can I avoid GMOs?

What Should I Be Taking Daily to Stay Healthy?

brick_wall2We get this question a lot  from customers when they come in for the first time. Although we can never prescribe, we can give great information on the highest quality products available, because that’s all we carry!

A standard for everyone who wants lifelong, vibrant health are the “FOUNDATION 4” supplements. They include: Vitamin/minerals, Omega 3 fatty acids, Digestive enzymes and Probiotics. Anyone, from seniors down to toddlers can benefit with those four products. Of course dosages will be different depending on age and health status, but the foundation four products carry over through all generations.

It’s important to remember that many of our foods are depleted of certain nutrients as modern corporate farming methods have resulted in soils that are lacking in many nutrients. Add to this extensive processing, improper storage, etc., and its little wonder that many of the foods that reach our tables cannot meet our nutritional needs. This means for optimum health, it is necessary to get nutrients in the form of supplements.

#1.  A High Potency, Whole-Food Based, All-Natural Multivitamin/Mineral

Not all vitamins are created equal!  Vitamin supplements can be divided into two groups; synthetic and natural.  Synthetic vitamins are produced in labs from chemicals that mirror their counterparts found in nature. Natural vitamins are derived from food sources so your body recognizes them as food and utilizes them more efficiently.

Supplements that are not labeled natural may also include coal tars, artificial coloring, preservatives, sugars, and starch, as well as other additives like aluminum (YES, aluminum!). You should be aware of these harmful elements when you purchase any supplements. Even vitamins that state they are natural, may not be extracted from whole food sources. Read labels carefully and remember that you get what you pay for! Don’t expect to feel more energy when taking a mass produced, low-potency “once daily” that you picked up in the vitamin aisle at the local grocery or dollar store. You may as well take the money you spent and flush it right down the toilet because with the coatings and binders used manufacturing synthetic multis, they aren’t going to break down and absorb anyway.

Look for a vitamin that is extracted from whole food concentrates that does not contain an entire list of “other ingredients” like binders, fillers, artificial colors, coatings and such. Natural vitamins do not contain any of those things. One to try:  Pure Essence Lab’s One ’n Only or Life Essence.  They are long-time Baum’s Best Sellers!

#2. Essential Fatty Acids from Fish Oil

Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) are considered “essential fats” because they are required for good health but cannot be produced by our bodies.  Research has determined that in order to prevent deficiency and ensure optimal health, EFAs should be taken daily.

Proper cell function is dependent on a balanced intake of Omega-3 to Omega-6 fats. The American diet is so overloaded with Omega-6 fats from processed foods, refined vegetable oils and meat that it is nearly impossible to maintain a proper balance. When Omega 6 is out of balance in the body, it causes inflammation. Chronic inflammation causes disease. Omega 3’s are absolutely necessary to keep the Omega 6’s in check, keep inflammation to a minimum and help prevent disease. The list of the benefits of Omega 3 is long. It includes:

  • Cardiovascular Health
  • Joint Health
  • Brain/Memory/Attention
  • Eye/Vision Health
  • Healthy Skin
  • Healthy Mood
  • Immune System Support

Quality is extremely important when purchasing fish oil.  If you open a bottle of fish oil and it stinks or smells “fishy,” throw it out!  Good quality fish oil, should never smell bad or give you rancid fish burps. Baums only buys the highest quality fish oils on the market, so YOU can too! One to try: Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega with D3

#3 Digestive Enzymes

One of the major theories behind the inclusion of digestive enzymes as a foundation supplement stems from the work of physician Edward Howell. In the 1930s and 1940s, he did extensive research on enzymes and declared them essential. He noted that the cooking and processing of foods, destroys enzymes that naturally occur in foods.  According to Dr. Howell, “our overly cooked and processed diet led to dramatic changes in the ability of modern men and women to digest foods and remain healthy.”

Let’s use beans as an example. You rinse them, drain them and cook them for a long time. Any enzymes contained in the beans were destroyed by this process. Without enzymes, what happens? You eat the beans, you get bloated, gassy and uncomfortable. The beans haven’t digested properly and they ferment instead, causing gas. If you had taken a digestive enzyme supplement prior to eating those beans, they would have been better digested and the chance of gas would have been greatly reduced. You also are able to absorb much more of the nutritional value when enzymes are available to help break down foods.

Beans are just one example. Anything you see in a box, sitting on the shelf of the grocery store, has almost certainly been stripped of its enzymes.  Without  enzymes, packaged foods can sit on the shelf much longer without spoiling.

Enzyme Experts recommend that you take a digestive enzyme blend prior to meals to ensure proper digestion. A blend will cover all types of food, including protein, carbohydrates, fiber & fats.

#4 Probiotics (good bacteria)

Chances are you’ve heard of probiotics – especially if you’ve seen a yogurt commercial in the last couple of years – but do you have any idea as to what they really are, how they work, or why we really need them?

Probiotics are naturally occurring bacterium that live in our intestinal tract. The most abundant being acidophilus and bifidobacterium. Probiotics help keep balance in our bodies, from fighting-off harmful bacteria we ingest, to fighting off allergies.

Most people don’t know that most of their immune system is located in the gut as a vast network of lymph tissue referred to as GALT (gut associated lymphatic tissue). The probiotics in our gut are constantly interfacing with the GALT and essentially priming the immune system for contact with other bacteria. One way probiotics keep us healthy is by breaking-down other bacteria in the foods we eat. This helps prevent food-born illnesses such as salmonella. They also populate themselves in healthy numbers so that when other bacterium are ingested, the healthy ones crowd them out, preventing illness.

It’s important to remember that when anyone takes an antibiotic that is prescribed by a doctor, it kills ALL bacteria in the body. Both good and bad. Often this causes diarrhea or even constipation. It is vitally important to restore those good bacteria for optimal health and wellness. You can take probiotics and antibiotics at the same time, just take them as far apart from each other as possible.

Baums carries probiotics for everyone, from newborns all the way through the senior years. Come in and pick up more great information on probiotics and the wonderful ways they keep us healthy!

Amalgams & Mercury Damage

Reblogged from: The Holistic Dentist

ImageBefore yesterday was through, the ADA was in full spin mode over Thursday’s Dr. Oz Show: “Are Your Silver Fillings Making You Sick?” Apparently oblivious to irony, they reiterated their usual claim that there’s “no sound science” supporting mercury amalgam’s well-documented health risks – and then insisted on its safety.

As if saying something often and loudly and forcefully enough could somehow make it true.

It’s like when amalgam’s defenders say that the mercury it contains isn’t the dangerous kind – and is even a little magical:

Mercury is an important component in the fillings because it effectively binds the other metals together, forming a strong bond that contributes to the filling’s durability. It is important to note that there are several kinds of mercury. The mercury found in water that can build up in fish and lead to health problems if you ingest too much is not the same type of mercury used in amalgam. The mercury in amalgam is contained, or sequestered, within the filling.

Of course, even the ADA agrees that mercury vapor is released during chewing or grinding. A 2009 paper in Chemical Research in Toxicology estimated that older fillings may have lost up to 95% of their original mercury content. That mercury doesn’t just disappear, of course. The body’s self-regulating mechanisms clear as much of it as it possibly can. That which isn’t excreted is stored, typically gravitating toward fatty tissues such as the liver and brain.

More, although the mercury in amalgam may start out in elemental form, it doesn’t stay that way. As Dr. Huggins notes in It’s All in Your Head, mercury released from amalgams fillings can become methylated.

Mercury is highly reactive chemically. It likes to combine with biological tissue. In the mouth, mercury has the ability to combine with a carbon-hydrogen compound called a methyl group. When mercury combines with methyl groups it is called methyl mercury.

Methylation actually begins in the mouth , due to the action of oral bacteria, but it can occur elsewhere (also). And “although the amounts found are small,” wrote researchers in the Journal of Nutritional & Environmental Science, “any measurable amount of methyl mercury” only adds to a body’s total toxic burden.

Methylmercury is a bioaccumulative toxin. That’s why mercury in fish – especially fatty fish – is such a concern. When mercury contaminates water, it gets methylated by bacteria. Fish exposed to this methylmercury accumulate it in their bodies. When we eat them, we get a dose of the stuff, too.

And there is no question about it: the stuff is highly toxic. It’s main damage is neurological, particularly during the developmental period before birth and into a child’s early years of life.

Of course, it has other effects, as well – including a somewhat surprising one suggested by a recent study. Methylmercury exposure in young adulthood appears to raise the risk of developing diabetes later in life.

The study, published last month in Diabetes Care, analyzed data from nearly 4000 adults between the ages of 20 and 32. According to lead author Ka He of Indiana University,

Our results are consistent with findings from laboratory studies and provide longitudinal human data, suggesting that people with high mercury exposure in young adulthood may have elevated risk of diabetes later in life.

Why? It may be related, at least partly, to pancreatic beta cell dysfunction. These cells have been shown to play a major role in type 2 diabetes.

The abstract of the Diabetes Care study is available here.

We know that our current diabetes epidemic, like its companion obesity epidemic, has many causes. Further study is needed to know if we need to add yet another cause to that list.

Are You Taking This Vital Mineral For a Healthy Heart?

Among the top nutrients for heart health, magnesium really stands out. It’s used in scores of enzymatic reactions, and it’s necessary for normal muscle function. Unfortunately for many people, they’re seriously low on this mineral.

A shortage can cause or worsen congestive heart failure, atherosclerosis, chest pain (coronary vasopasm), high blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmias, heart muscle disease (cardiomyopathy), heart attack, and even sudden cardiac death.

Your cells need a steady supply of magnesium to maintain proper smooth muscle function in your blood vessels. In addition, magnesium helps shuttle potassium and sodium, two other essential electrolytes, into and out of cells, maintaining proper balance (homeostasis).

Magnesium deficiencies can lead to muscle weakness and tremors (spasm) and a host of cardiovascular problems ranging from high blood pressure to arrhythmias.

So what’s going on to cause such a depletion of this crucial mineral?

  • Stress- Your body responds to various types of stressors by releasing the “fight or flight” hormones adrenalin and cortisol. Cortisol causes your cells to dump magnesium which is flushed out through the kidneys. High stress causes high stress hormones which causes low magnesium.
  • Drugs Deplete Magnesium– Especially high blood pressure medicines which usually have a diuretic effect. They flush not only excess fluids from your body, they also flush minerals, especially magnesium and potassium. If you take medications for high blood pressure, make sure to have your mineral levels checked by your doctor. Low energy and achy pains are a sign of mineral depletion.
  • Current Farming Methods– The use of chemical fertilizers that are high in phosphates, nitrates, and ammonia has depleted our food  of magnesium, making supplementing essential to our health.

Baums carries a wide variety of magnesium supplements. Stop in and talk to us about the best choice for you, today!

I’m Already Sick! What Should I Do?

There are various natural remedies one can utilize to combat the dreaded virus. To boost your chances of staying well, there are a few supplements you should keep on hand that just may tip the scales in your favor if flu strikes.

Difficult to spell and hard to pronounce, Oscillococcinum is the best-selling natural flu remedy in the world, because it works! “Oscillo,” as it is more commonly known, is a homeopathic preparation. It is taken at the very first sign of the flu. The moment you feel symptoms coming on, you take a few pellets of Oscillo. Don’t wait until you’re already sick, get some now! Keep it in your medicine cabinet so you’ll have it if you need it!

Purple pigments, known as anthocyanins, are powerfully antioxidant, but also appear to possess anti-viral activity. Elderberry is widely available in supplement form, in liquids, capsules and tablets. Like Oscillo, it is most effective when taken at the first sign of flu.

Both Oscillo and Elderberry are safe for children.

Are You Breathing Lake County Air Right Now?

Hold Your Breath While You Read This… (not really)

Antioxidants are substances or nutrients in our foods which can prevent or slow oxidative damage to our body. When our body cells use oxygen, they naturally produce free radicals (by-products) which can cause damage.

Free radicals are also introduced through external sources such as exposure to pollution. Other free radical producers that damage cells include things that people put into their bodies, such as- alcoholic beverages, unhealthy, processed, chemical-laden foods, cigarette smoke & stress. In much the same way as oxidation creates rust, causing a breakdown on the surface of metal objects, oxidation inside the body causes a breakdown of cells. Free radicals produced by this breakdown attack healthy cells, usually DNA as well as proteins and fats. This chain of events weakens immune system function as well as speeding up the aging process. It is also linked to several diseases such as cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetes, various forms of cancer, and heart disease. Some studies indicate possible links to arthritis and several other chronic conditions.
